This internship involves supporting the development of a novel smartwatch application “Warrior Wellness”, designed to detect acute mental health crises in special operations soldiers. Our client is the US Special Operations Command and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Our engineering team works closely with our intern team to use advanced machine learning, programming, and research methods to develop a final product that helps military personnel adapt to mental health conditions. Responsibilities of the intern include recruiting participants and conducting weekly follow ups, interacting and reporting weekly to the development team, documenting and tracking data, creating visualizations and analytics, as well as contributing to market research and literature reviews.
Special Qualifications:
Applicants should have strong organizational and communication skills, be willing to learn, and take initiative. Proficiency in data analytics is preferred and an understanding in conducting research studies is recommended. Upper division coursework in Psychology, Cognitive Science, or Neuroscience is also strongly recommended.

Description of Organization and Population Served:
We are growth partners helping entrepreneurs and fast-growing companies leverage pricing and best-in-class go-to-market strategies to deliver sustainable high-growth. Most companies struggle with pricing and monetization. In fact, it is a top 5 reason why new ventures fail. Unfortunately, not everyone finds the help they need to tackle these topics. Large companies (and mature startups) use expensive consulting firms; we want to make this accessible to all, so we have developed a suite of technology-based solutions to achieve this.
Description of Fieldwork Project and Responsibilities of Intern:
We have been building a Software layer on top of our existing Advisory services. This product is in stealth mode. We have already conducted successful UAT, validated the need, the business model and sustainable revenue stream. As we conduct further testing, we would like to invite someone to join us in the journey. We have an MVP which is constantly evolving. We estimate we have only tackled 5% of what could be done; but for now, we’re staying focused. Improvements to front-end, back-end, environment, all are up for grabs. We have a plan on what we wish to tackle but we're also very open to new ideas. What will you want to tackle?
Special Qualifications:
* A smart person, willing to think outside the box and happy to have an open discussion. While we have strong expertise in the market we are targeting; we are playing in an unchartered territory when it comes to how we are tackling it. * An entrepreneurial spirit. Willing to be agile, learn on the go, go beyond what a standard developer would do in a bigger team * A tinkerer, pursuing a technical degree or with equivalent experience with a strong foundation in the fundamentals of computer science, a strong development basis and a willingness to find solutions on their own. * We are not developers ourselves but have worked alongside them so we know the language (just don’t expect us to be purists when it comes to naming things!). * Skillsets which we're interested in: full stack (tackle both the front and the back-end of the issue); good basis in modern web development, frameworks, programming languages, and database solutions; ability to work on a solution together with non-tech specialists * Due to the global nature of our team, the ability to spend a few hours either early morning PST or late evening PST (Hours flexible under prior arrangement). You will still have a point of contact the whole day PST.
Hourly Commitment Per Week: 10-20 (flexible)
How does this relate to Cognitive Science?:
When talking pricing, we are tackling a topic that everyone knows, but very few actually comprehend. Pricing is not just 1 number; it is thousands of decisions. It is not just building an algorithm; it is also understanding how different people will tackle the elements of this algorithm. It is building a medium that offers as much coaching as it does number crunching.

How does this relate to Cognitive Science?:
Understanding the relationship between a person's known interests and unknown interests is a key component in designing video games that attempt to appeal not only to core gamers, but to new markets as well. Using visual stimuli and storytelling within Rice Games' projects will be able to invoke emotions from players, and one big goal of this internship is to find ways to bring out many emotions from the player. Further developing programming logic and intuition through video game programming will allow the Intern to become a more proficient programmer, and data analysis and advanced topics such as Machine Learning and Computational Linguistics will become easier to pick up.
