The Department Chair provides leadership to a community composed of about 200 PhD students, 30 postdoctoral trainees, 40 administrative staff, 40 research staff, and 85 core, adjunct, and emeritus faculty. The Chair’s Office serves as the liaison between the Department of Psychology and the rest of the UCLA community, including the Division of Life Sciences, College of Letters & Science, professional schools, and non-academic units and offices, as well as the general public. The Chair’s Office is involved in the daily operations of the department, and with issues that affect department faculty, staff, and students. Some of the matters handled by the Chair’s Office include the following:
- Alumni outreach and development
- Appointment of department’s leadership (Area Chairs, Vice Chairs, Managers) and composition of departmental committees
- Department sponsored events
- Departmental Bylaws, including interpretation, execution, compliance, and revision
- Internal and external communication
- Operational budgetary and financial management
- Policy development and oversight of departmental initiatives
- Program review
- Recruitment, retention, and retirement issues
- Strategic planning
